Busy with babies!

We're busy this fall season with alpaca crias. So far we have 9 on the ground and they are gorgeous. The babies are from our champion sires BF Riccardo, Masterpiece Aslan and Peruvian Alliance. They keep us busy but we love every minute of it.

A big thank you to my husband, Dave, for being an exceptional caretaker. I took this photo after he slept in the barn for about a week with this little cria. With much prayer and God's help, he saved her life!

Our beautiful stallion, Blue, was sold. He will be leaving any day now to go to his new home. I will probably cry when he leaves... he will be missed terribly.

Leila our Anatolian Shepherd

Leila is our livestock guardian dog that replaced Sadie when she died. She is an incredibly smart dog and she's doing a fantastic job for us.

Anatolian Shepherds are an old Turkish breed. They were specifically bred to protect livestock and she has proved to be an excellent example of the breed.

She truly is amazing and worth her weight in gold. I've come to love her quickly and I depend on her greatly to protect our alpacas.

Jenni had a beautiful healthy little cria. We named her Gold Star Angel. She is extremely friendly and curious so we're having a lot of fun with this little girl.

LOL this is a bad angle so I cut Dave out. He's spraying the alpacas legs and bellies with water. They love getting sprayed. Usually they jump around and play in the water but Jenni is due any day now and the last thing she wants to do right now is jump around. As soon as the baby is born I'll post some pictures of her.

Oh LOL! I didn't realize until I saw this picture... we accidently sheared part of Ruby's top knot off! Not to worry, it'll grow back! ;)

For some helpful tips on shearing, visit our article on Alpaca Shearing Tips. By looking at Ruby's head you can see we still make some mistakes when we shear. It's quite a learning process but don't get discouraged. If you have any questions about shearing please feel free to contact us and we'd be more than happy to help out.

Ruby was running around and she sure got thirsty. We wean our babies between 5 and 6 months old. Ruby just turned 5 months old so her days as a nursing baby are almost over. She's shorn now too so she's starting to look more grown up.

I've been busy burning brush lately. Well, when I let the alpacas out front the other day they couldn't wait to roll in the new ash pile. They love to roll, especially in ash. Down in South America they use ash to keep the bugs off of the alpacas. Somehow our alpacas knew about this too! Ocean just finished rolling and Ruby couldn't wait for her turn.

Sugar Bear had a beautiful colt today. Dave is imprinting while I'm taking the pictures so you'll see hands in most of my baby pictures. :)

In case you didn't know what imprinting is... horses and alpacas are flight animals. Instinctively they are afraid of people. When we imprint we get the babies use to the human touch. They smell our hands and we rub them all over so they will learn to trust us. It's well worth it because it's an impression that lasts a life time. It actually works because we have very friendly horses and alpacas.

Alpacas are flight animals so they are usually very timid. People are amazed at how tame some of our alpacas are. We give them a lot of TLC and plenty of hugs and kisses. :)
It's easy to fall in love with alpacas... they all have smiles on their faces and they have a pleasant hmmm. Ahh music to my ears!

Jenni is due in May but she was so happy the other day that she did a little dance! Jenni needs her toenails trimmed but we have to wait. It's best not to stress a pregnant female in the first two months and the last two months of pregnancy. She'll get her nails done when we shear her this May.

Our last cria for the year and it's a girl! Celine gave birth to a real sweet heart today. We named her Ruby. She is a very energetic little girl. We were amazed, she's already trying to run with other crias.

We feed our horses and alpacas every morning and every evening. We spend a lot of hands on time with our animals and it shows. They are all very tame, loveable, and yes, they are all of our babies. Oh, and maybe just a little bit spoiled.

My favorite alpaca, Onyx, had an absolutely beautiful true black girl today. We named her Rebecca after my niece. She's another Midnight RB Cicero girl and she takes after her sire with her spunk and charm. She is already showing a gorgeous fleece with incredible luster and crimp. We'll have to take this baby to the show when she's old enough.

Nika had a gorgeous dark brown girl. We named her Reba. Oh, in case you thought she had twins, she didn't. Twins are very rare in alpacas. The little boy behind Reba is one of our star boarders, Aristotle. Both babies were born on the same day. October 9, 2005. They are both from the same stud, Midnight RB Cicero.

Fall Crias

Ocean had our first fall cria. A big beautiful boy. We named him Rembrandt. The average alpaca cria weight is between 15 to 20 pounds. Ocean has big babies, they have all been over 20 lbs. and very energetic.

We now have all of our spring babies on the ground and everyone is happy and healthy.

It's a boy!

This morning Tia finally gave in after 362 days and gave birth to a beautiful little boy. He's dark maroon in color and has a ton of energy. Sienna couldn't wait to welcome him into the alpaca family. Sienna's all excited now that she has two new playmates.

Another girl!

Our girl Bertie finally gave birth to a beautiful dark silver grey little girl. I found out that every time I pick a girl's name out ahead of time we have a girl! Her name is Malita. I named her after a neighbor of ours. Actually there is a joke behind her name. Dave and I thought our neighbor's name was Omalita and we called her that for years. Well, we just found out her name is Malita but folks around here like to say ol' (old) before the name. Anyway, we'll probably end up calling her ol'Malita. :)

We're still waiting on Tia to have her baby. Today makes 360 days! Whew.... too long if you ask me, especially in this heat.

Alpaca Shearing 2005

Well we're finally done with shearing this year. First we sheared all of our alpacas and then we sheared three other ranches that needed our help. It was fun but it'll be awhile before my back and knees forgive me. :)

I've included a before and after picture of Samson Knight so you can get an idea as to what an alpaca looks like before and after shearing. It doesn't even look like the same boy!

In fact the alpacas even have a funny reaction towards each other after shearing. They all gather around inspecting each others hair-doos. We get a big kick out of them as they check each other out. Now they're ready for spring breeding and for the warmer weather.

This year we'll be sending our fleece down to the Roswell Woolmarket in New Mexico. They need 5000 lbs. before they can put it on the world market. They currently have 1000 lbs. so if any alpaca farms are interested in sending their fleece please feel free to contact us for the info.

Another Beautiful Colt

While we're waiting on the alpacas to have their babies, I thought I'd share our newest addition.

Daisy had her colt yesterday and he is adorable. He has the markings of a buckskin but he's dark. He has two white socks in the back but the wildflowers (weeds) cover them up in the picture.

The horses in the background of the picture are the boys. They had to check out the new baby too.

It's a girl!!!

Selina had her baby on 4/14/05 and we're so excited because this little girl is gorgeous!

We've decided to name her Sienna.

Here she is at only 3 days old and she's already a whopping 17 lbs.
We'll definitely have fun showing this one.

Well, our first born this year isn't an alpaca but a colt.

Our gal, Vegas, had a beautiful buckskin paint colt out of our handsome stud, Blue Poco Fax, a Take it to the Max boy.
